work in progress | 2012 | 5 min

This work is progress seeks to investigate the dualities that exist within apparent balance and stability. Movement generation is inspired by earth, air, fire, and water, the yin and yang of the physical world. Not only does earth stand in both contrast and balance to air, as fire does to water, but we also see that same complimentary opposition within each element. Earth is comprised of both dust and thick mud; air may be a still space to breath, or a destructive hurricane wind; fire provides light, cooks our meals, and also consumes entire forests and homes; and water provides a foundation for life, can be a serene pond, or may swallow cities in watery walls of power. Yet all these things stand with just enough tension to remain in a general balance. In this exploration, we look at both the patterns and unpredictability of nature within a functioning order, how these natural contrasts might be mapped on the physical body, and what they look like in the emotional space between people.
